COURSE DETAILS
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to work safely at heights.
Training in RIIWHS204E Working safely at heights is essential for any individuals conducting work at heights or supervising those conducting work at heights. This can include work on roofs, scaffolding, ladders, elevated platforms, or any other environment that poses the risk of a fall from one level to another.
COURSE CONTENT
Students will learns working at heights safety concepts including:
- Hazard identification & risk assessment
- Risk control methods
- Forces and falls
- Selection of fall arrest equipment and safe use
- Selection of anchors
- Safe access and work areas
- Safe use of temporary work platforms & ladders
Students will be trained and assessed to competently perform the following activities:
Identify work requirements
- Access, interpret and apply height safety procedures & WHS requirements and ensure the work activity is compliant
- Inspect site to determine layout, condition of structures, prevailing weather conditions, & equipment requirements
- Identify, select and check safety equipment for serviceability
- Identify, manage and report potential risks and hazards
Identify work procedures and instructions
- Consult with authorised person to select tools & equipment
- Select, wear and care for personal protective equipment
- Inspect/install fall protection & perimeter protection
- Identify approved methods of moving tools and equipment & minimise potential hazards associated with tools at heights
Access and install equipment
- Consult with authorised personnel to ensure anchor fall protection and all required equipment is correctly installed
- Use recommended methods to access work area
Perform work at heights
- Check access from ground to work area & ensure safety
- Keep fall equipment in place and adjusted appropriately for movement during work
- Undertake manual handling of materials and equipment
- Locate materials and equipment ensuring that they are safely secured and distributed
- Check safety system periodically for compliance
- Monitor & reassess risk control measures in accordance with changed work practices and/or site conditions and undertake alterations
Clean up work area
- Consult with authorised personnel to ensure safety system is dismantled and removed
- Clear work area and dispose of or recycle materials
- Clean, check, maintain and store tools and equipment
DURATION
1 Full day course (approximately 8 hours)
DELIVERY MODE
Face to face
There are no pre-reading requirements. All content is covered in class as part of the training.
ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS
Students will be required to complete a written theory assessment as well as a practical demonstration assessment.
Theory Assessment
Mixture of multiple choice and short answer questions. Student will be required to write down their own answers.
For students with learning disabilities or lack of English proficiency, reasonable adjustment may be applicable on a case-by-case basis. Please give us a call on 1300 001 201 to discuss your specific learning needs.
Practical Assessment
Each student will be required to participate in at least two practical scenarios which will assess their ability to safely work at heights, including:
- accessing, interpreting and applying technical and safety information for working at heights
- assessing hazards and risks associated with working at heights and implementing control methods
- selecting, wearing and caring for personal protective equipment
- identifying required safety systems including fall protection and associated equipment
- checking the correct fitting, adjusting and anchoring of fall protection and associated equipment
- performing work safely at heights.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Course Pre-Requisite
No formal pre-requisite requirements apply.
Age Requirements
Students must be 16 years of age or older. Participants under 18 years of age will be required to provide parental consent to attend training.
Fitness Requirements
Students must be relatively fit and able to perform the activities outlined in the Assessment Requirements in order to be accurately assessed and deemed competent.
Given the nature of the practical assessment, students must be at a minimum fit to crawl and climb and not have a fear of heights

Language, Literacy and Numeracy
Sound reading and writing skills required to undertake the written assessment. Reasonable adjustment may be applicable on a case-by-case basis. Please get in contact with us if you have any questions regarding the minimum LLN requirements.
Unique Student Identifier (USI)
Students attending this course require a Unique Student Identifier (USI). If you do not have a USI, you will need to get one from the USI Website: https://www.usi.gov.au/students/create-usi

Suitable Clothing
Please arrive in suitable clothing (enclosed footwear mandatory, long sleeve shirts and long pants are recommended)
FAQ & ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
How often should I complete working at heights training?
Working at Heights competency does not formally have an expiry date. However, it is industry standard to complete the training again (refresh) every 2 years.
The “refresher” training is also a full-day course.
How often do you deliver working at heights courses?
Public Working at Heights training courses are scheduled roughly once per week at our East Bendigo Training centre. Additional courses may be scheduled depending on the level of demand.

Where are your training centres located?
Our Bendigo Training Facility is located at 10 Trantara Court, East Bendigo, VIC 3550
Our Perth Training Facility is located at 21 Joel Terrace, East Perth, WA 6004
How do I book in for a working at heights course?
You can book in by calling our office at 1300 001 201 or online by selecting your preferred date from the list of dates under Upcoming Public Courses.
Once enrolled, you will receive an automated confirmation e-mail with full details about your upcoming booking.
Can you provide working at heights training within our workplace?
Yes! We can definitely deliver workplace training. Please give us a call at 1300 001 201 to discuss your training needs further and receive a quote for on-site training.
Do you take large group bookings?
Currently, any courses delivered at our training facilities are capped at 10-12 students per class.
For on-site training, we may be able to deliver training to larger groups; however, that is dependent on the type of training being delivered and the size of the available facilities.

Influenza and COVID-19 Management
The health and wellbeing of our personnel and fellow students at ISH24 is our number one priority.
ISH24 will continue to deliver training in a face-to-face environment with the following measures in place:
- Face masks are available to all students upon request
- Hand sanitisation products are available to all visitors
- Thorough cleaning procedures are implemented at all training facilities
- Ad hoc safety measures might be implemented in response to rise in infections or based on recommendations from regulatory and governing bodies
We ask that students also follow basic hygiene and safety precautions while completing training with ISH24.
We continue to closely monitor the constantly evolving situation surrounding coronavirus and will amend our service delivery procedures to stay in line with the advice of the Australian Government.
