NATIONAL RECOGNITION
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be issued with a Statement of Attainment nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework for the following unit(s) of competency:

PUASAR022 Participate in a rescue operation

COURSE DETAILS
This course is designed for anyone who may be required to perform rope-based rescues to extract injured or enabled personnel from difficult places. The 5-Day Vertical & Confined Space Rescue Course pertains to personnel from emergency services and/or volunteer organisations or organisations where confined space work and work at heights is undertaken.
COURSE CONTENT
The following subjects will be covered as part of the training:
Prepare for rescue operation
- Analysing operation information
- Allocating team roles
- Identifying and selecting rescue equipment and PPE
- Anticipating hazards
- Compliance requirements for equipment and systems
- Software theory: harness, ropes, slings etc.
- Hardware theory: carabiners, descenders, MPDs etc.
- Knots and hitches
- Anchor points and systems
Assess and manage rescue risks & apply appropriate controls
- Assess confined space features
- Suspension trauma / Intolerance
- Abseiling techniques and skills
- Rope ascension skills (Climbing ropes)
- Redirection and use of pulleys
- Rescue team ethos and ideals
- Building mechanical advantage systems for hauling
Gain entry to confined space / rescue site
- Confined space entry permits
- Atmospheric monitoring & ventilation
- Respiratory protection
Remove casualties
- Treating casualties
- Patient packing and handling in stretchers
- Preserving an incident scene and collecting evidence Set up safe systems for lowering causalities

5-Day course (approximately 8-9 hour days)
DELIVERY MODE
Face to face
There are no pre-reading requirements. All content is covered in class as part of the training.
ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS
Students will be required to complete a written theory assessment as well as a practical demonstration assessment.
Theory Assessment
Mixture of multiple choice and short answer questions. Student will be required to write down their own answers.

Practical Assessment
Each student will be required to participate in multiple practical scenarios in a team setting which will assess their ability to conduct vertical & confined space rescue operations, including:
- assessing a scene
- assessing, treating and packaging casualties
- checking and maintaining rescue equipment
- communicating with team members and casualties
- conducting risk assessment
- establishing safe access systems and extricating casualties efficiently
- managing edge protection and equipment
- moving in conditions of reduced visibility
- operating breathing apparatus
- participating in and contributing to briefings and debriefings
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Course Pre-Requisite
It is essential that the prerequisite units listed below are obtained prior to the issuance of PUASAR025 – Undertake confined spaces rescue to individuals within the fire sector or the units contributing to the attainment of a fire qualification.
- HLTAID011 Provide First Aid
- PUAFIR306 Identify, detect and monitor hazardous materials at an incident
Recommended prior training
The following units are not mandatory pre-requisites but it is highly recommended that individuals completing the 5-day rescue course have completed the following units of competency:
- RIIWHS202E – Enter and work in confined spaces
- RIIWHS204E – Work safely at heights
- HLTAID011 – Provide first aid
This is to ensure that the learners have a good base knowledge of safety concepts related to confined space and working at heights before diving into the advanced concepts of rescue.
Age Requirements
Students must be 16 years of age or older. Participants under 18 years of age will be required to provide parental consent to attend training.
Fitness Requirements
Students must be relatively fit and able to perform the activities outlined in the Assessment Requirements in order to be accurately assessed and deemed competent.
Given the nature of the practical assessment, students must be at a minimum fit to crawl and climb and not have a fear of heights or confined spaces.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy
Sound reading and writing skills required to undertake the written assessment. Reasonable adjustment may be applicable on a case-by-case basis. Please get in contact with us if you have any questions regarding the minimum LLN requirements.
Unique Student Identifier (USI)
Students attending this course require a Unique Student Identifier (USI). If you do not have a USI, you will need to get one from the USI Website: https://www.usi.gov.au/students/create-usi

Suitable Clothing
Please ensure you are wearing appropriate clothing (enclosed footwear & long pants mandatory, long sleeve shirt recommended)
If students have their own PPE (harness, helmet, safety glasses) they are encouraged to bring those items as well.
Rope Gloves are mandatory for the course. If students do not have their own rope gloves, they can purchase a pair from ISH24 on the first day ($35.00)
Training Location
The 5-day rescue course is delivered at the ISH24 Rescue Training Centre, 2 Railway North, Goornong VIC.
FAQ & ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
How often should I complete vertical & confined space rescue training?
Vertical & confined space rescue competencies do not formally have an expiry date.
However, it is best practice to refresh your training in line with your workplace requirements.
How often do you deliver vertical & confined space rescue courses?
Vertical & confined space rescue courses are occasionally scheduled as public sessions but most often they are scheduled upon request only.

Yes! We can definitely deliver workplace training. Please give us a call at 1300 001 201 to discuss your training needs further and receive a quote for on-site training.
Do you take large group bookings?
Course sizes for vertical & confined space rescue training are capped at maximum 8 students.
For on-site training, we may be able to deliver training to larger groups; however, that is dependent on the type of training being delivered and the size of the available facilities.

Influenza and COVID-19 Management
The health and wellbeing of our personnel and fellow students at ISH24 is our number one priority.
ISH24 will continue to deliver training in a face-to-face environment with the following measures in place:
- Face masks are available to all students upon request
- Hand sanitisation products are available to all visitors
- Thorough cleaning procedures are implemented at all training facilities
- Ad hoc safety measures might be implemented in response to rise in infections or based on recommendations from regulatory and governing bodies
We ask that students also follow basic hygiene and safety precautions while completing training with ISH24.
We continue to closely monitor the constantly evolving situation surrounding coronavirus and will amend our service delivery procedures to stay in line with the advice of the Australian Government.
