NATIONAL RECOGNITION
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be issued with a Statement of Attainment nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework for the following unit(s) of competency:
HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation
HLTAID015 Provide advanced resuscitation and oxygen therapy
COURSE DETAILS
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to use specialised equipment in the provision of resuscitation and oxygen therapy in line with the Australian Resuscitation Council (ARC) guidelines.
HLTAID015 Provide advanced resuscitation and oxygen therapy applies to persons who may be required to use specialised equipment to provide resuscitation or oxygen therapy in a range of complex situations, including community and workplace settings.
This training is delivered in conjunction with HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation.
Students enrolling into this unit must hold current competency in HLTAID011 Provide First Aid.
COURSE CONTENT
The following subjects will be covered as part of the training:
Responding to an emergency situation
- Recognise an emergency situation
- Identify, assess and minimise immediate hazards to health and safety of self and others
- Assess the casualty and recognise the need for first aid
- Assess the situation and seek assistance from emergency response services
Perform resuscitation procedures
- Perform single-rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) or two-rescuer resuscitation procedures, including use of oxygen, in accordance with the ARC guidelines and availability of rescuers.
- Display respectful behaviour towards casualty.
- Use available resources and equipment according to manufacturers’ instructions.
Deliver oxygen therapy
- Identify need for oxygen therapy, including by using a pulse oximeter.
- Use appropriate delivery device to provide oxygen.
- Monitor casualty condition and rectify issues preventing adequate treatment.
Communicate details of the incident
- Accurately convey incident details to emergency services.
- Report details of incident in line with appropriate workplace or site procedures.
- Complete applicable workplace or site documentation, including incident report form.
- Maintain privacy and confidentiality of information in line with statutory or organisational policies.
Review the incident
- Recognise the possible psychological impacts on self and other rescuers involved in critical incidents
- Participate in debriefing to address individual needs
- Evaluate management of the incident
- Review contingency planning
DURATION
1 half-day course (approximately 4 hours)
DELIVERY MODE
Face to face
There are no pre-reading requirements. All content is covered in class as part of the training.
ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS
Students will be required to complete a written theory assessment as well as a practical demonstration assessment.
Theory Assessment
Mixture of multiple choice and short answer questions. Student will be required to write down their own answers.
For students with learning disabilities or lack of English proficiency, reasonable adjustment may be applicable on a case-by-case basis. Please give us a call on 1300 001 201 to discuss your specific learning needs.
Practical Assessment
Each student will be required to participate in practical scenarios to demonstrate that they have:
- managed, in line with ARC guidelines, the unconscious, breathing casualty including appropriate positioning to reduce the risk of airway compromise
- managed, in line with ARC guidelines, the unconscious, non-breathing adult, including:
- performing at least 2 minutes of uninterrupted single rescuer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on an adult manikin placed on the floor
- selecting and inserting an appropriate basic airway adjunct
- using defibrillator (AED) to deliver at least one shock
- demonstrating a rotation of single rescuer operators with minimal interruptions to compressions
- responding appropriately in the event of regurgitation or vomiting
- managing oxygen equipment appropriately
- managed, in line with ARC guidelines, the unconscious, non-breathing infant
- managed a casualty with life-threatening bleeding requiring use of tourniquets and haemostatic dressings
- managed a conscious casualty who requires supplemental oxygen
- monitored and coordinated maintenance of resuscitation equipment and oxygen therapy equipment
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Course Pre-Requisite
Students enrolling into this unit must hold current competency in HLTAID011 Provide First Aid.
Age Requirements
Students must be 16 years of age or older. Participants under 18 years of age will be required to provide parental consent to attend training.
Fitness Requirements
Given the nature of the practical assessment, students must be fit and able to squat, bend over and perform chest compression on a CPR manikin on the floor.
This training would also incorporate advanced simulated first aid incidents which may require accessing the casualty, as well as using a stretcher, so a good level of fitness is highly recommended.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy
Sound reading and writing skills required to undertake the written assessment. Reasonable adjustment may be applicable on a case-by-case basis. Please get in contact with us if you have any questions regarding the minimum LLN requirements.

FAQ & ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
How often should I complete Advanced Resuscitation training?
The Australian Resuscitation Council guidelines state that all those trained in HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation should refresh their CPR skills at least annually – ARC GUIDELINE 10.1 Basic Life Support Training. The same expiry timeframe applies to HLTAD015 Provide advanced resuscitation and oxygen therapy
The “refresher” training for CPR and Advanced Resuscitation is a half-day course each.

Can you provide Advanced Resuscitation training within our workplace?
Yes! We can definitely deliver workplace training. Please give us a call at 1300 001 201 to discuss your training needs further and receive a quote for on-site training.
Do you take large group bookings for Advanced Resuscitation training?
Currently, any courses delivered at our training facilities are capped at 10-12 students per class.
For on-site training, we may be able to deliver training to larger groups; however, that is dependent on the type of training being delivered and the size of the available facilities.

Can you deliver Advanced Resuscitation and Provide CPR on the same day?
Yes, we can customise the training delivery to each client’s needs and can definitely include both HLTAID009 Provide cardiopulmonary resuscitation and HLTAID015 Provide advanced resuscitation and oxygen therapy into one full-day course (approximately 8 hours).

Influenza and COVID-19 Management
The health and wellbeing of our personnel and fellow students at ISH24 is our number one priority.
ISH24 will continue to deliver training in a face-to-face environment with the following measures in place:
- Face masks are available to all students upon request
- Hand sanitisation products are available to all visitors
- Thorough cleaning procedures are implemented at all training facilities
- Ad hoc safety measures might be implemented in response to rise in infections or based on recommendations from regulatory and governing bodies
We ask that students also follow basic hygiene and safety precautions while completing training with ISH24.
