Underground Rescue Training
8-Day Training Course

UNITS OF COMPETENCY
The units of competency which make up the 8-Day Underground Rescue Training Course can all be applied towards RII30719 Certificate III in Emergency Response and Rescue:
RIICOM201E COMMUNICATE IN THE WORKPLACE
In completing this unit, the students will gain skills and knowledge required to successfully:
- Plan and prepare for workplace communication using equipment and systems,
- Communicate using communication equipment and systems,
- Carry out face-to-face routine communication, and
- Complete written documentation.
RIIERR301E RESPOND TO WORK SITE INCIDENTS
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to respond to work site incidents and establish forward control points in the resources and infrastructure industries. In completing this unit, students will learn how
to successfully:
- Plan and prepare for incident response,
- Respond to incident, and
- Prepare forward control point.
RIIRIS301E APPLY RISK MANAGEMENT PROCESSES
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to apply risk management processes in the mining, drilling and civil infrastructure industry. This unit applies to those who carry out or assist in carrying out risk assessment in the workplace. In completing this unit, students will learn how to successfully:
- Plan and prepare for risk management,
- Identify and assess unacceptable risk,
- Identify and recommend risk controls,
- Contribute to the implementation of risk controls, and
- Review risk management documentation.
RIIWHS201E WORK SAFELY AND FOLLOW WHS POLICIES AND PROCEDURES
This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to work safely and follow WHS policies and procedures in the Resources and Infrastructure Industries. In completing this unit, students will learn how to successfully:
- Access and apply site safety procedures,
- Apply personal safety measures,
- Apply operational safety measures,
- Maintain personal wellbeing, and
- Identify and report incidents.
PUASAR022* PARTICIPATE IN A RESCUE OPERATION
This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to participate in rescue operations as a member of a rescue team; it underpins specialist rescue operations. This includes a wide range of rescue and environmental situations which may incorporate industrial, rural, bush and extreme environmental conditions. In completing this unit, students will learn how to successfully:
- Prepare and respond to rescue,
- Contribute to a risk assessment at the scene,
- Perform rescue, and
- Conclude rescue operations.
*Pre-requisite units: students must hold current competency in HLTAID011 Provide First Aid prior to completing this unit (only applicable to individuals within the fire sector).
RIIERR302E RESPOND TO LOCAL EMERGENCIES AND INCIDENTS
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to respond to a range of local emergencies and incidents. It includes implementing response plans, monitoring the situation, taking necessary precautionary measures, and supporting formal relief. In completing this unit, the students will gain skills and knowledge required to successfully:
- Prepare to respond to local emergency or incident
- Respond to local emergency or incident
- Support formal relief and debrief
RIIERR303E OPERATE IN SELF-CONTAINED REGENERATIVE OXYGEN BREATHING APPARATUS
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to navigate, communicate, and apply safe work processes and procedures using a self-contained regenerative oxygen breathing apparatus in an irrespirable atmosphere in the resources and infrastructure industries. In completing this unit, the students will gain skills and knowledge required to successfully:
- Prepare to operate in breathing apparatus,
- Operate in irrespirable atmospheres, and
- Carry out post-operation activities.
RIIERR305E CONTROL UNDERGROUND FIRES
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan and prepare for underground fire-fighting activities and monitor, control and extinguish underground fires in the resources and infrastructure industries. In completing this unit, the students will gain skills and knowledge required to successfully:
- Plan and prepare to control underground fires,
- Determine fire fighting resources and procedures,
- Control the fire, and
- Restore and refurbish fire equipment to operational condition.
RIIERR306E CONDUCT UNDERGROUND SEARCH
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to plan and conduct underground searches and manage unplanned events in mining operations.
In completing this unit, the students will gain skills and knowledge required to successfully:
- Plan and prepare for underground search,
- Conduct search,
- Manage unplanned event or change in circumstances, and
- Finalise search.
RIIERR307E EXTRICATE CASUALTIES FROM UNDERGROUND INCIDENT
This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to establish extrication systems and stabilise and transport to safety casualties involved in underground mining incidents. In completing this unit, the students will gain skills and knowledge required to successfully:
- Plan and prepare to extricate casualty from an underground mine,
- Establish extrication system and extricate casualty,
- Stabilise casualty,
- Transport casualty to a place of safety, and
- Restore and refurbish equipment.
RIIERR309D ESTABLISH AND OPERATE FROM FRESH AIR BASE
This unit describes a participant’s skills and knowledge required to establish and operate from a fresh air base in Metalliferous mining.
In completing this unit, the students will gain skills and knowledge required to successfully:
- Plan and prepare to establish a fresh air base,
- Establish the fresh air base, and
- Operate from fresh air base.
PMAWHS211 PREPARE EQUIPMENT FOR EMERGENCY RESPONSE
This unit of competency covers the skills and knowledge required to undertake minor maintenance and other preparation of equipment for use in emergency situations. This unit of competency applies to operators who are required to apply procedures to inspect and assemble equipment, undertake minor servicing, ensure equipment is ready and available for use, identify problems and take action. In completing this unit, the students will gain skills and knowledge required to successfully:
- Identify emergency equipment,
- Inspect and assemble emergency equipment,
- Carry out minor servicing of equipment in accordance with procedures, and
- Report and record equipment status.
PUAFIR306* IDENTIFY, DETECT AND MONITOR HAZARDOUS MATERIALS AT AN INCIDENT
This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to use specific equipment to detect airborne contaminants, liquids and solids at a hazardous materials incident.

This unit describes the skills and knowledge required to conduct fire team operations, including fighting and containing fires. In completing this unit, the students will gain skills and knowledge required to successfully:
- Prepare for fire team operations
- Fight or contain fire
- Strategies to minimise fire recurrence
- Report and debrief
- Audit firefighting installations.
PUAFIR324* RENDER HAZARDOUS MATERIALS INCIDENTS SAFE
This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to safely combat incidents involving hazardous materials. In completing this unit, the students will gain skills and knowledge required to successfully:
- Recognise hazardous materials incidents
- Identify and assess hazards
- Assist with development of plan for mitigation of HAZMAT incident
- Assist with implementation of plan for mitigation of a HAZMAT incident
- Assist with review of plan.

PUASAR024* UNDERTAKE ROAD CRASH RESCUE
This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to gain access to and extricate casualties from vehicles that have crashed on the road, such as cars, motorcycles, buses, vans, tracks and semi-trailers, whilst minimising the potential for further injury and preserving the integrity of evidence. In completing this unit, students will learn how
to successfully:
- Prepare and respond to road crash rescue,
- Establish and maintain rescue scene safety,
- Manage casualties,
- Remove casualties from vehicle, and
- Conclude road crash rescue operations.
*Pre-requisite units: students must hold current competency in PUASAR022 Participate in a rescue operation and HLTAID011 Provide First Aid prior to completing this unit.
Confined Space Rescue Training
2-Day Training Course
4 nationally accredited units of competency
UNITS OF COMPETENCY
The units of competency which make up the 2-Day Confined Space Rescue Training Course can be applied towards RII30719 Certificate III in Emergency Response and Rescue.
PUASAR025 UNDERTAKE CONFINED SPACE RESCUE
This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to undertake rescues in confined spaces as a member of a single organisation or team involving multiple organisations.
The unit is applicable to a range of confined space rescue situations undertaken by personnel from the emergency services, volunteer organisations and/or organisations where confined space work is performed. Permits may be required to perform work in a confined space in various jurisdictions. In completing this unit, students will learn how to successfully:
- Prepare for confined space rescue operation,
- Assess and manage confined space rescue,
- Determine location and condition of casualties,
- Gain entry to confined space,
- Remove casualties, and
- Conclude rescue operations.
PUAFIR210 PREVENT INJURY
This unit involves the skills and knowledge required to identify and avoid workplace hazards and risks, to maintain personal safety and to report identified issues to supervisors and team members.
It is designed as an introduction to safe work practices and is specifically relevant to a workplace requiring personnel to be involved in incidents, prescribed burns and/or operational aspects of emergency management. It includes identifying, implementing and monitoring effectiveness of workplace hazards and risk control procedures. In completing this unit, students will learn how to successfully:
- Identify workplace hazards and risks, and advise others
- Implement hazard and risk control procedures
- Monitor effectiveness of hazard and risk control procedures
PUAFIR207* OPERATE BREATHING APPARATUS OPEN CIRCUIT
This unit of competency involves the skills and knowledge required to select, don, operate and maintain breathing apparatus equipment in a hazardous atmosphere. It includes conducting pre-donning checks and tests of breathing apparatus; donning and checking of breathing apparatus; operating breathing apparatus and concluding breathing apparatus operations. In completing this unit, students will learn how to successfully:
- Conduct pre-donning checks and tests on breathing apparatus,
- Don and check breathing apparatus,
- Operate breathing apparatus, and
- Conclude operations.
*Pre-requisite units: students must hold current competency in HLTAID003 / HLTAID011 Provide first aid prior to completing this unit (only applicable to individuals within the fire sector).
MSMWHS216 OPERATE BREATHING APPARATUS
This unit of competency covers the skills and knowledge required to operate and maintain breathing apparatus and equipment in an irrespirable atmosphere, as defined by the Australian Standard AS/NZS 1715:2009 Selection, use and maintenance of respiratory protective equipment.
- Conduct pre-donning checks and tests on breathing apparatus
- Operate breathing apparatus
- Conclude operations in accordance with procedures

It includes a range of vertical rescue situations, preparing and responding to rescue situations, assessing rescue scenes, establishing vertical rescue systems and performing in and terminating rescues. In completing this unit, students will learn how to successfully:
- Prepare and respond to vertical rescue,
- Assess scene,
- Establish vertical rescue system,
- Perform vertical rescue, and
- Terminate vertical rescue operations.

PMAWHS211 PREPARE EQUIPMENT FOR EMERGENCY RESPONSE

Fitness Requirements
Students must be relatively fit and able to perform the activities which make part of the Assessment Requirements in order to be accurately assessed and deemed competent. Given the nature of the practical assessment, students must be at a minimum fit to climb and crawl, and not have a fear of heights or confined spaces.
Reasonable adjustment may be applicable on a case-by-case basis. If you have any questions about the practical assessment or the fitness requirements, please give us a call 1300 001 201.
Language, Literacy and Numeracy

Suitable Clothing & PPE
Please arrive in suitable clothing (enclosed footwear mandatory, long sleeve shirts and long pants are recommended). For training delivered on client sites students will be required to abide by site-specific uniform & PPE requirements.

NATIONAL RECOGNITION
Upon successful completion of each training module students will be issued with a Statement of Attainment for the units of competency achieved during each block of training. Students who meet all the packaging rules requirements for
RII30719 Certificate III in Emergency Response and Rescue
can apply for a credit transfer to be issued a Qualification Certificate nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework.
