NATIONAL RECOGNITION
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be issued with a Statement of Attainment nationally recognised under the Australian Qualifications Framework for the following unit(s) of competency:

COURSE DETAILS
This unit of competency covers the skills and knowledge required to operate and maintain breathing apparatus and equipment in an irrespirable atmosphere, as defined by the Australian Standard AS/NZS 1715:2009 Selection, use and maintenance of respiratory protective equipment.
Training in MSMWHS216 Operate breathing apparatus applies to operators who are required to wear breathing apparatus because they are working:
- in a confined space
- with hazardous gases/vapours
- in an oxygen deficient atmosphere
- in other situations requiring the wearing of breathing apparatus.
Operators may also be required to wear breathing apparatus in emergency situations, however, this is not the prime focus of this unit.
COURSE CONTENT
The following subjects will be covered as part of the training:
Conduct pre-donning checks and tests on breathing apparatus
- Inspect breathing apparatus for immediate use in accordance with relevant procedures (emergency procedures, work instructions, SWMS, etc.)
- Report/record faulty or damaged equipment
Operate breathing apparatus
- Identify, monitor and control hazards
- Establish and maintain communication with appropriate personnel throughout the activity
- Correctly don and operate self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
- Monitor remaining Woking time available and return to a respirable atmosphere as required
- Implement entrapment procedures
- Maintain personal safety at all times
Conclude operations
- Close down breathing apparatus set
- Remove breathing apparatus set
- Undertake after-use cleaning and maintenance of breathing apparatus
- Report faults and/or damage to breathing apparatus
- Make equipment ready for operational use
DURATION
1 half-day course (approximately 4 hours)
DELIVERY MODE
Face to face
There are no pre-reading requirements. All content is covered in class as part of the training.
ASSESSMENT REQUIREMENTS
Students will be required to complete a written theory assessment as well as a practical demonstration assessment.
Theory Assessment
Mixture of multiple choice and short answer questions. Student will be required to write down their own answers.
For students with learning disabilities or lack of English proficiency, reasonable adjustment may be applicable on a case-by-case basis. Please give us a call on 1300 001 201 to discuss your specific learning needs.
Practical Assessment
Please note, students must be clean shaven in order to be satisfactorily assessed for the practical breathing apparatus component of the training
Each student will be required to participate in at least one practical scenarios which will assess their ability to:
- conduct pre-donning tests on breathing apparatus
- correctly don and operate breathing apparatus
- identify hazards and apply control measures according to procedures
- communicate while using breathing apparatus
- determine the available working time from a breathing apparatus set
- correctly close down, remove and clean breathing apparatus
- report faults and/or damage to breathing apparatus
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Course Pre-Requisite
No formal pre-requisite requirements apply.
However, it is highly recommended that individuals who enrol in this unit of competency hold current competency in RIIWHS202E Enter and work in confined spaces and/or have working knowledge of safety concepts related to working in or with confined spaces.
Age Requirements
Students must be 16 years of age or older. Participants under 18 years of age will be required to provide parental consent to attend training.
Fitness Requirements
Students must be relatively fit and able to perform the activities outlined in the Assessment Requirements in order to be accurately assessed and deemed competent.
Given the nature of the practical assessment, students must be at a minimum fit to climb and crawl, and not have a fear of confined spaces.

Language, Literacy and Numeracy
Sound reading and writing skills required to undertake the written assessment. Reasonable adjustment may be applicable on a case-by-case basis. Please get in contact with us if you have any questions regarding the minimum LLN requirements.

Suitable Clothing
Please arrive in suitable clothing (enclosed footwear mandatory, long sleeve shirts and long pants are recommended)
FAQ & ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
How often should I complete BA training?
Breathing apparatus competency does not formally have an expiry date.
However, the Australian Standard AS/NZS 1715:2009 Selection, use and maintenance of respiratory protective equipment stipulates the frequency of retraining and reassessment ‘as a minimum shall be considered at least annually’.
The “refresher” training is also a half-day course.

Can you provide BA training within our workplace?
Yes! We can definitely deliver workplace training. Please give us a call at 1300 001 201 to discuss your training needs further and receive a quote for on-site training.
Do you take large group bookings for BA training?
Currently, any courses delivered at our training facilities are capped at 10-12 students per class.
For on-site training, we may be able to deliver training to larger groups; however, that is dependent on the type of training being delivered and the size of the available facilities.

Influenza and COVID-19 Management
The health and wellbeing of our personnel and fellow students at ISH24 is our number one priority.
ISH24 will continue to deliver training in a face-to-face environment with the following measures in place:
- Face masks are available to all students upon request
- Hand sanitisation products are available to all visitors
- Thorough cleaning procedures are implemented at all training facilities
- Ad hoc safety measures might be implemented in response to rise in infections or based on recommendations from regulatory and governing bodies
We ask that students also follow basic hygiene and safety precautions while completing training with ISH24.
We continue to closely monitor the constantly evolving situation surrounding coronavirus and will amend our service delivery procedures to stay in line with the advice of the Australian Government.
